The SEND 0-25 team held a parent support group coffee morning in Bridlington in February and received amazing feedback from the families attending:

Just want to say thankyou so much for your help and reassurance this morning. If it wasn't for this morning I wouldn't of got the section 17 child in need assessment done. I phoned early help and they referred me to safeguarding partnership hub, asked for the sec 17, answered the questions, she sent it off.

“I’m writing to you to express our families deepest thanks for the way in which Sarah Leadley (Advice and Guidance Officer) has helped our son over the past six years.

"[CHILD] has ASD and ADHD and has had a real struggle with school ever since approximately 2010. We’ve had to contact the council on multiple occasions for help and advice as we tried to get [CHILD] a settled and productive school life.

"We now find ourselves with [CHILD] at Hull College, doing very well as a happy and settled young person and who is looking to got to University next year. The fact that we are in this position now is due in no uncertain terms to the unequivocally excellent support we have been given by Sarah. She has always been available to provide objective and unbiased advice concerning [CHILD'S] future and has gone out of her way on more than one occasion to help our family out. She is, quite simply, an outstanding council employee and one who you should feel very fortunate to have as a colleague.

"We honestly feel that without Sarah’s support, [CHILD] would not be where they are today. The future for [CHILD] looks very bright and this was not the case almost six years ago when we first met Sarah - I think it is entirely justifiable to say that if we hadn’t have met Sarah then we would be a much darker situation now than we find ourselves in.

"I really don’t feel that public service employees receive praise as much as they should - it is always easier to complain than give praise and I always seek to contact those in authority when a colleague of theirs had helped.

Feedback for Holly Strafford (Education, Health and Care Officer – EHCO) and all colleagues in Specialist Services

We are an Autism family living in Hornsea, a family of five, with three small children aged five and under.

Our eldest daughter Olivia, and our son Owen both were born with Autism and other associated lifelong and incurable neurological disabilities.

Just a few years ago me and Mark wouldn’t have been able to even tell you what Autism was, and now our entire lives revolve around providing SEN care to our disabled children. We are well versed in the SEN world now!

I remember when Olivia's education setting first said they were going to apply for an EHCP for her, and wondering what on earth that could be. When I searched it online I remember feeling dread and worry that we had this huge fight ahead of us. Being honest I didn't know if I had much fight left in me. We were in a deep dark hole - after all our entire lives had changed forever and we were grieving the life we thought we would have all while adjusting to the lives we would lead.

Olivia and Owen have now both been through the EHCP process with ERYC.

I have to say I think you saved my life. I don't think that is an understatement to make. I did not have more fight left in me. I was exhausted, truly and utterly bitterly sleep deprived, tired and done.

ERYC has the most sympathetic and kind approach to EHCPs I have heard of from the support groups. Rather than making us and our disabled children your opponents you wrapped your arms around us. You picked us up from depths I cannot even begin to put into words.

Family life is hard. Obsessive, compulsive and repetitive self-injurious and distressing behaviours are commonplace in our daily life and managing them takes all of our strength. But the EHCPs you have given our children mean that during educational hours we can be Gemma and Mark again - knowing our children are cared for and safeguarded while we earn a living and taste our old lives for a few hours again.

So thank you, for being an ally to us and not seeing us as an opponent. I know how lucky we are to have you guys. Thank you so much.

[Child] signed up with the Hull Youth Enterprise Team. She will be attending their office every Tuesday afternoon for at least 6 months but there is no time scale, it can be years.

They will be mentoring her in building her own business, as well as looking at confidence, resilience, enterprise / job skills.

It is a 13-step programme where they work through a workbook with small assignments to complete.

Thank you for all your help, we would not have got her sorted without your help.

I just wanted to thank you for all of your support with C over his primary school years. Your support has enabled him to have a positive school life, ensuring his hearing needs have been met at all times, and ensuring teachers were following your advice. As a parent, it can feel difficult to speak to teachers and explain about his hearing loss, or to find time when they’re not busy. So we really value your time with him and the school.

Congratulations from a Councillor

Following the SEND Board meeting this afternoon (9 June 2022), Cllr Aitken wanted to say congratulations on the success of the pop-up pods, delivered by the 0 - 25 SEND Team, and she wants to ensure that all elected members are aware of them so they can be promoted across the authority to increase maximum participation to ensure early intervention from services.

Hayley has been a great support to me and my child. She has gone above and beyond the call of duty. She is worth so much more than her weight in gold. Hayley helped me gain confidence in myself and encouraged me to become a stronger person and to believe in myself. In turn this helped to develop a better relationship between myself and my child. Hayley is very knowledgeable and had so much information that was very valuable and helpful to know.'

"Clare (Withell) has been the most amazing portage support worker for our daughter, . She has provided play therapy sessions to , supported us as parents, and me in particular as the main carer of *****. She always gave me her time, empathised with me, helped me when I needed advice or guidance, and nothing was ever too much trouble. I can honestly say when our involvement with Clare has to come to an end, there will be a big, gaping hole in our lives. The 0-25 SEND team are lucky to have Clare on their team."

Feedback on the Local Offer

"Last week I saw the Local Offer. The local offer was way much better than the previous one. The document talks to you and it is a joy reading the document . It is colourful which is very helpful and nicely laid out. I especially like the separate sections of each activity on the Local Offer. I only have positives to share on the presentation of the Local offer.

"Sam (Wright) and Natalie (Dodsdale) have been absolutely fantastic, both have always been contactable, held my hand through the whole process, kept me up to date throughout, which I can't thank them enough because I understand how heavy the caseloads are. They've strived to allow my children gain access to the essential services necessary for them to participate within the education system. Sam has only been our 0-25 coordinator for a short time and already she's helped us immensely. I definitely could not have taken this journey without her help.

"My son's 0 to 25 Family Co-ordinator Iwona has always been accessible, responsive, friendly and supportive.

She understands how important good, easy, timely and consistent communication is for families like ours who have so many difficulties and concerns to deal with.

A great example of this is that recently Iwona contacted me unexpectedly by telephone asking if it was a good time to talk. She advised me she was changing roles and that we would have a new Family Coordinator. She took the time to check how we were doing and asked if we needed anything and even said if we had any issues in the future I could still contact her. Then reassurance that she had passed on our history and information to our new worker was given. She gave me the contact details and background of our new Family Coordinator and arranged a time for her to call me to introduce herself and advise when our next contact/review would be. This call happened as arranged and was much appreciated.

This very positive experience stands out and is what Parent/Carers and our Children and Young People need to feel informed and respected."

I really appreciate all that you've done to improve C's EHCP, so thank you for taking the time to do this for him. The higher funding level you achieved is also brilliant and will make such a difference to his level of support in school.

Sorry if C's case has been stressful your end. I've got a childcare background, and I just want things to be as best as they can be to give C the best possible start so I hope you can understand.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for sending the feedback to Darren for me. It is greatly appreciated you all taking on my views, as I want it all to help make things better for people. Hearing a thank you from you all makes it better and makes us want to get involved again in things like this."

Hannah and Harrison

Our son Harrison was referred to Early Help and Support, and Portage via our health visitor in 2015, when he was presenting behaviours relating to social communication difficulties. With this help and support, Harrison was diagnosed with autism and global development delay in 2017.

Harrison also received and Educational Health Care Plan EHCP, which enabled Harrison to secure a place at the specialist school, St Anne's.

We cannot thank the National Portage Associates at the East Riding and Howden Pre-school enough for planting the seeds for Harrison's education.

With Harrison's school journey beginning and educational support in place via an EHCP, we had outgrown our need for Early Support via Portage, but we did feel a little bit lost without a having a named person to contact whenever we were out of our depth.

Then we met Sarah, at the 0-25 service.

Sarah was not only a person on the other end of the phone, she visited us regularly and has become a dear family friend, accompanying us to hospital appointments and school EHCP reviews, referrals for additional services, mediating, advocating and fighting our corner with Harrison needs and well-being at heart. We are so thankful for everything she does to support us as a family and we would be lost without her!

Student E

My daughter, was assessed by SAPTs in July and since returning to school in September the help they have put in place for her has made the world of difference.

Donna (Brady) is easy to get hold of and always there to answer any questions I have. She is a wealth of knowledge in a world which can be scary to somebody who is new to it. She really gives the impression that she has your child's best interests at heart and is there to assist you when you need it.

The addition of Ms S in class with E 3 days a week has had the biggest impact on her. She helps her to access her aids and get set up in class so that she can then work independently. Not only does she assist with her visual needs but she is an emotional support for her too.

E has grown in confidence the last few months and her work within school is already improving. She loves to read and the iPad she received means she can now access her reading books and read them much more comfortably.

I cannot thank the team for everything that they do to support children like E.

Student H

The SaPTS Team came into our lives as our son H transitioned from Nursery to Preschool and then onto full time education. He is registered severely sight impaired and we feel so grateful that this support has been available to us. They are easy to reach out to for any questions or guidance we need from our perspective at home and have played an enormous part in H's education, providing specialist visually impaired teachers who are teaching him braille and touch typing as well as helping him keep up with his classmates with the regular school work.

They have assisted the school in making all the lessons and play accessible to H which has meant that he feels included at all times.

Their help and support has really been immeasurable and we hope to keep working with them in the years to come.

Success stories

SAPTS (Hearing Impairment Team)

Callum is a profoundly deaf young man who is a talented footballer. He has been asked to attend an FA regional emerging talent programme which has the potential to lead on to playing for the Deaf England football team.

We all have our fingers crossed for Callum.

"I would like to highly recommend Unique Friends which I take my 5 year old son to. He loves all the activities, sensory room, and home education! We are made to feel very welcome. It’s a fantastic group, me and son love it there, all so friendly and can offer advice. So glad I found it."

Student X

X started out playing off sixth form staff, care home staff and social worker against each other over health issues and attendance. This was stopped by arranging a meeting between school and showing X we talk to each other. X left year 13 in 2021 to go on to study music at Hull University. X spent her school career in local authority care and moved out into a supported placement during Lockdown 1.0. Through partnership working with her carers, we managed to keep X on track and support her through UCAS and student finance remotely. X is living in at Hull University.

Student Y

Y was in local authority care throughout his time in sixth form. Y was a talented artist with a desire to study interior design. Y’s social worker and school worked closely together, guiding him through UCAS and student finance which were new experiences. They also accessed York St. John’s care leavers’ support to allow accommodation all year round, baggage storage etc. and bursaries.

Student Z

Z had aspirations of being a social worker but despite strong enrichment including interviewing potential social workers and youth parliament, didn’t secure any offers from interviews. Z’s relationship with his carers broke down and he moved to Kirklees to live with an aunt. School supported him through completing his A-levels and the evidence gathering process for TAGs via Teams and arranged a careers interview in Kirklees. Z started a degree apprenticeship with Specsavers in September 2021.

Student XX

XX left year 11 in 2020. XX was vastly underperforming and in danger of becoming NEET.

XX was part of a cohort of 10 selected in October 2019 for the school’s ‘Green Card’ programme. These students were all in danger of becoming NEET, however they had an interest in construction and so were selected for the programme. The programme included site visits to the Bridlington railway station remodelling, classroom-based days in which they completed the necessary learning for their L1 Health and Safety on Construction Sites (which they all successfully completed) and the Constructions Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card or ‘Green Card’ for working on construction sites.

They were also supported to each individually write a CV. Through the careers leader’s employer network XX secured an interview with Humberside Excavations which led to a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering. XX is still with Humberside Excavations. After gaining experience in different departments with the company he is now working on sites.

Case Study - Charlie

Charlie is an independent lady who started in Caring Caterers – later became Café RouTEs, completing her vocational profile in catering and hospitality then began job searching with Employment Support worker Sue. The training at Worklink took a little longer for Charlie as she had time off for medical reasons so her stay was over a longer period of time to give her enough practical skills, confidence and time with Employment Support trainer Julie to complete the necessary work for her profile.

Charlie completed and updated her CV with Sue and they began applying for jobs including at Poundstretcher and cleaning positions. Unfortunately for Charlie she wasn’t offered these positions.

She was successful at getting a position at Parkway cinema in Beverley, however due to the pandemic she was made redundant, so job searching began again.

Charlie had a very keen interest in The Deep in Hull, the attraction and what it is about and when a job came up in the café it seemed a perfect fit for Charlie.

Charlie was supported by Sue with the process which included applications, interviews, induction all still whilst we were going through the Covid pandemic. This had an affect on start dates due to staff having to isolate and Charlie began to get more anxious as it was put off.

Charlie started in August 2021 and does approximately 10 hours per week and more when required.
