Gig Buddies Mencap

Description

COVID-19 SERVICE UPDATE

Gig Buddies is a befriending project for people with learning disabilities. At Gig Buddies we match young people with learning disabilities with members of their local community to hang out together, whether that is gigs, clubs, going to the cinema or theatre, or just a quiet drink in the pub. Whilst these venues are closed due to Covid-19 we’re continuing to hang out online virtually.

Virtual Gig Buddies is where you can join an online community which meet online twice a month on video chat to do lots of different activities together including, quizzes, music bingo, craft workshops, dance and sing along. You also get paired with a gig buddy who has similar interests and hobbies so you can meet virtually and begin your friendship with the hope to meet in person once things are safe to do so.

Sessions run every other week and we have a weekly Afternoon Tea on a Wednesday at 2pm for those who want to pop along during the day for a chat and a cuppa. Group sessions are usually Wednesday evening at 7pm but can sometimes be on a Monday or Tuesday evening too at 7pm.

It’s an opportunity to meet other people and to hang out together online.

The project is for aged 18 to 35.

Gig Buddy Liam says, "The lockdown is hard for everyone but it can be really hard for people with a learning disability, like me. That's why I'm happy to still be in touch with my buddy Becky. We speak over the phone and video chat. It's also been really good to still get to speak to other Gig Buddies and see their faces through our virtual socials. I like to hear about what they're doing during lockdown and how they're coping. It makes me feel less lonely and helps to feel like we're all in this together."

Gig Buddies is a volunteer befriending project in Hull and East Riding for adults with learning disabilities, matching them with a volunteer who shares similar interests.

We recognise that a lot of people with learning disabilities (PWLD) don’t have many people in their lives who aren’t paid to be there or friends who are based around a genuine shared interest.
